Miss Trimbles Trapdoor Book review

[ 1 ] April 25, 2010 |

We have had the opportunity to review Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor books. They are fantastic. Our oldest who is autistic and has a love of history has read these over and over again.

The first book we read Miss Trimble’s trapdoor has 49 pages and is a really easy read for first graders. Blake was taken with the book and we read a chapter a night which is only a couple of pages. We let him read it to us. Instead of us blowing through the book. The pictures are bright and colorful. Really captivating for the kiddos.

The books main character Tyler is a nervous little boy and he doesn’t have many friends. He taps his foot nervously and is surprised when he falls through the floor into a secret room. The room is full of old books that are protected by a dog named Barnabas Bailey, he becomes Tyler’s tour guide through the books.  He is able to take Tyler to any point in time and allow him to learn history as the story unfolds before him.

The second book was The Perseverance of Christopher Columbus. Is 67 pages long. So really quick reads. Tyler has to give an oral report  on Columbus. Barnabas and Tyler embark on Christopher Columbus journey. I love that it shares Columbus’s  hardships and setbacks. It teaches the kids that they cant give up. This gives Tyler the courage to carry on.

I recommend these books for all children who are learning to read or have just started reading. Lori Jordan Rice is the author of  Miss Trimble’s Trapdoor books. She is a teacher herself, who has become a stay at home mom to three boys. She wrote these books because  she was discouraged by the historical illiteracy. She wanted to show kids that learning history is fun. I truly believe she has done just that in these two books. We so hope she continues to do so.

You can find out more at Miss Trimble’s  fantastic website.

FTC DISCLOSURE: I was provided these books at no cost for review. The opinons expressed are 100% my own.
