Wordless(ful) Wednesday With Linky
Strawberry Shortcake done on a Bavarian Sponge Cake. Is beyond heavenly. I saw the fresh strawberries sitting up at the Commissary all bright and red. Then I saw the sponge cake next to it. In German none the less. Wasn’t sure I would like it as much as I do on angel food cake. I will never use the angel food cake again. Lucky for you I got the recipe for the best cake from Sheneil.
Bavarian Sponge Cake
1 angel food cake mix, prepared
2 c. milk
4 egg yolks, beaten lightly
1 c. sugar
2 tbsp. flour
pinch of salt
2 tsp. vanilla
2 env. unflavored gelatin
1/2 c. water
3 c. whipping cream
4 egg whites, beaten stiff
Blend together milk, egg yolks, sugar, flour and salt. Cook on medium heat until thick and coats a spoon. Cool slightly and stir in vanilla. Dissolve gelatin in water and stir n the warm custard. Whip 2 cups cream and fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Fold in the custard. Line the bottom of a tube pan with waxed paper. Tear apart the angel food cake in 1/2 inch pieces. Place one layer of cake in pan then a layer of custard; repeat 4 or 5 times. Refrigerate overnight. Whip remaining cup of cream with 1 tablespoon sugar for a topping. Unmold cake and garnish.
This little blue box is heaven!
